"3 Month" Appointment

Madison's insurance changed over to Kaiser, so we needed to get her into an appointment to get her 3 month vaccination shot. (Have I mentioned that we're doing an altered/delayed vac schedule? That means we need to go in for "shot only" visits in between the well visits.) Kaiser wouldn't just let us bring her in for the first time for a shot-only, which I understand.

We headed over there on Thursday the 9th (which made her 1 day shy of 12 weeks.)

So here were her stats:

Weight - 14lbs 11.4oz (97% percentile - She's on the chart!)
Height - 25.5 inches (99% percentile - Our tall girl)
Head Circ - 42cm (94% percentile)

The great thing about the visit is that we were randomly paired with a pediatrician (figuring we'd carefully select one later) and we loved her! She has an older child as well as a little girl who is only a week older than Maddie. I love that she is right in the thick of the same stuff we are. She was also really great and supportive of our delayed vaccination schedule!! I'm stoked. So far I'm really impressed with Kaiser.

We went across the hall after her appointment to get her Pc vac. Mads did even better than last time and had ZERO reaction over the next couple of days.

By the way, Happy Easter!! I'll post photos of what the Easter Bunny brought later. For now, here's her cute little tushie.

Funny Fussing

Maddie loves to do her tummy time on her Daddy's chest. Well... usually she does, *lol*

And here's one of her *trying* to sit up on the couch. She's still a bit wobbly.

Some Bunny Loves Us!

Be prepared for lots of Easter photos in the next week or so. :) This morning we took Mads to see the Easter Bunny for the first time! She was grumpy all morning, so we were a little worried (well, Jason wasn't because he thinks the baby crying on Santa/Easter Bunny's lap is hilarious), but she did really well. No smile, but she was totally calm the whole time.

I also snapped a couple of her in her bunny ears. I'm hoping to get some outside at the park, but it's raining today.

A quick update on us:

Yesterday was my first day back to work, but I'm only working a couple of hours a day from home, so I'm easing my way back into the swing of things. It's going well so far.

Maddie is doing really well and is so much fun. I'm going to be adding some photos and really cute videos very soon.

Last night was Madison's full night sleeping in her bassinet next to me instead of in the bed with me. She did so well!! I'm so proud. She slept just as long and as well as she did when she was in the bed. I really hope she keeps it up, because it seems much easier for us to transition her now vs. when she's older. To be honest, though, I already miss her snuggled up next to me through the night. :(

A Day In The Life of Madison

A Day In The Life of Madison

I spent Friday March 20, 2009 documenting a day in the life of Madison. I ended up taking a ton of photos and had a great time capturing all of the "mundane" moments that give me so much joy day to day. I won't take offense if you just skim through. I know it's a lot, but this is the kind of thing I'm going to love to look back on when Mads is older.

Morning! Daddy says goodbye to his girls with a kiss. And Maddie gets her breakfast in bed.

Time to hang out in the bouncer while Mommy takes a shower. She sure likes it!!

The bouncer, however, has a bit of an issue.

Getting dressed for the day.

Talking to Sarah while walking to Starbucks.

A nice lady offered to take a photo of us while Maddie took her morning nap.

Home for some internet time while Mads still slept soundly and then a snack.

The little bugger leaked out of her diaper, so a wardrobe change was in order.

Apparently she was pretty amused with herself for causing Mom trouble.

All packed up in the car!

Browsing for lullaby CDs at the local library. See Madison chewing on her hand? That means she's hungry and about to get very loud about it.

So it's time for lunch. No screaming babies in the Library. She's pretty easy to nurse in the ring sling....... Followed immediately by a milk coma.

The nap continues at home while Mom makes her own lunch.

Playtime! It was this day that she learned how to grasp and shake her toy all by herself!!

Tummy time.

Never enough food. :)

Daddy is home!!

She's always so happy and talkative when she first sees Dad.

Dads are good at getting gross lint from little baby's hands.

Down for the count again. And then Dad joins in the nap fun.

Back in the car with the whole family.

Dinner at "Aqui" with Sarah and Baby Aaron! Daddy is trying to keep food out of her hair. *lol*

We <3 our friends!

A short stroll and then some frozen yogurt from the Willow Glen Frozen Yogurt Company.

Back home for some more tummy time while mom tried to fix that stupid bouncer thing.

Before bed, little baby gets a massage. The first video is a leg/foot massage and in the second one I'm doing the "I love you" massage as well as other strokes to improve digestion.

2 Months

My sweet baby is already two months old!!

The Doctor

On the 17th, Madison, her Daddy, and I went to her pediatrician's office for her 2 month visit.

She weighed in at 14 lbs. and 25 inches!! She's completely "off the chart" (over the 100th percentile) for both. She's our big, beautiful, healthy girl. Her general exam went well and the Doctor said she's doing great.

Just for kicks I went online to find out a little more about where she is "on the chart." She's the size of an average 4 month old at two months. No wonder I'm about to move her from 3 month clothes to 6 month and we just bought size 2-3 diapers!!

Then came the shot. *UGH* We only did the Rotavirus and a 3-in-1 that included DTaP, Polio and HIB since we're delaying her vaccinations. The Rotavirus was oral and she even hated that. Once she swallowed it, the nurse gave her the shot (her first one ever) and she started bawling!! It was terrible. I couldn't help but cry a little with her. I immediately breastfed her, though it took a little time for her to latch since she was crying so hard. She unlatched to cry again once, but after that she was okay. Luckily, she didn't have ANY reaction to the immunizations.

A little about Madison at 2 months:

- She smiles constantly. I love the way her whole face lights up and how her eyes get all squinty because her chubby cheeks get pushed under them.

- She just moved from size 2 Pampers Swaddlers to size 2-3.

- I'm starting to pack up her 3 month clothing because she's now in the 6 month size.

- She tracks objects really well. Left/Right. Up/Down. She appears to see things at a far distance now.

- She has almost full head control. She does tummy time on My Brestfriend and will hold her head all the way up for 15+ minutes.

- She can sit up with the help of a Bumbo, though she usually leans to the right a little. (Why always the right side??)

- She is really into play time, loves her toys, and will get bored if there's not enough going on when she's awake.

- She can support her weight and stand for short periods of time.

Baby's First Cold :(

Maddie woke up at about 3:00AM (slightly early for her nightly wake-up) and she was Snot City!! You could hear it rattling around in there and she was coughing. The poor thing! She barely ate at all and seemed generally miserable.

Keeping her elevated seemed to be helpful, so we amped up the humidifier, put her in her car seat, put the car seat in bed (yes, seriously. lol.), swaddled her in one of those cool "swaddle me"s that has the hole for the car seat strap, and we all went back to sleep. Well, kinda. I slept extremely light and woke at her every tiny noise she made out of worry. She actually slept pretty well and woke up at around 7:30AM.

Today she's been eating a lot less than usual, sneezing, coughing, and sleeping A LOT. I just feel so bad and wish I could make her feel better. She's actually been in amazingly good spirits... Hardly fussing at all.

We took quite a few naps together today. Here we are shortly before I fell asleep, too.

We're hoping for a better day tomorrow!

A Couple More

Here's 1 more of her playing/babbling.

She can grasp things! I put the keys in her hand and she gave 'em a good shake. Oh yeah, and she's a total TV head... Just like mommy. :-/

Finding her voice.

Here's a little video of Mads playing on her mat and babbling a little. She's just too darn cute!!

Our Parenting Style

Just for randomness, I thought I'd document a little of what our day-to-day parenting style is at this time in Madison's little life.

We're admittedly a little "hippy" in our parenting approach. And we take to heart the findings that you can't spoil an infant.

I'm sure we'll be getting an ear full over time from people who feel much differently, but we're really comfortable with our decisions and trust our parental intuition.

Disclaimer: I really hope this doesn't come off as preachy. These are just the approaches that work for us.

- Exclusive Breastfeeding: She is on a breast milk only diet and I've decided not to pump for now. The pump is much less effective for me than when she actually nurses. I'm also very nervous about introducing a bottle and am wanting to avoid it if at all possible. Also, I'm EXTREMELY lucky to be able to take our daughter to the office with me and work from home when I start back at work.

- Sharing Sleep (also known as Bed Sharing, Family Bed, Co-Sleeping): In the very beginning nights that M was home from the hospital, she slept terribly in the bassinet right next to our bed. She woke constantly and cried often. On the 2nd or 3rd night, I pulled her into our bed, snuggled her next to me and she slept for 4 solid hours and I slept amazing! She hasn't left our bed since.

Now she sleeps so well that I actually feel GUILTY. It really shouldn't be this easy. She's on a pretty solid schedule of bath at 9:00PM if she needs it, feeding at 9:30, diaper change, then swaddle. Then around 10:15 I bring her into bed with me, turn on white noise (the ocean is our sound of choice), rock her for just a minute, put her down, sing to her, and then leave the room (whether she is asleep or not!). If she is awake when I leave, she happily falls asleep on her own shortly after. She sleeps solid until about 4:00AM, feeds, diaper change, and then back to bed where she falls asleep next to me until about 9:00AM!! Did I mention that not ONCE does she cry?? I'm subconsciously tuned into her at night and her random dream/grunt noises don't wake me, but her quiet hunger/awake noises do and out of bed we go. I can (and sometimes do) feed her laying down in bed, but I actually find it a little more of a pain than just going to the glider (until she has better head control at least.)

And yes, we've taken all of the safety precautions - mesh bed rail (she doesn't sleep between us), tight sheets, blankets only up to my hips, tiny firm pillow for me (my least favorite part of sleep sharing). We also have her fall asleep with a pacifier and keep a small fan going in the room to try to reduce the risk of SIDS.

- Babywearing - Baby Madison practically lives in my ring sling or Jason's Peanut Shell pouch. The concept of babywearing is to keep your baby happy and attached while getting on with your life. She LOVES to be worn so close to us and having her in a sling allows me to cook, clean, etc at the same time. This is also how we carry her when out of the house. She usually just sleeps the whole time. In fact, I used the stroller for the very first time on Friday to go for a power walk (she's 6 weeks.)

- Attachment Parenting - Involves all of the other practices I've mentioned so far (like Breast Feeding, Babywearing, Co-Sleeping, etc.) Also includes staying "tuned-in" to baby's needs and immediately responding to her cries.

- Delayed Vaccinations - We're using the Dr. Sears schedule of delayed vaccinations to reduce the number of vaccines she receives at one time. Her first set will come at her 2 month appointment on March 17th.

- Elimination Communication - We've just started looking into it, but may attempt to do EC occasionally to part-time at the start and then see how it goes.

- Cloth Diapering - Once Mads is a little older and stops having SO MANY soiled diapers, we'll probably move on to cloth instead of disposables. Admittedly, I'm a little intimidated by the up-front cost of cloth diapering and the extra laundry work.

_______________

Not that these approaches have anything to do with it (although I'd like to think they help!), but Madison is an extremely easy-going low-fuss baby. I don't think she has cried for more than a few minutes straight her entire life. She's such an easy baby and is so much fun to spend time with. We keep waiting for it all to change! *Haha* And it still might, but for now we're enjoying our sleep and quiet.
